You're not limited to one Blood Code either, you're able to use abilities in any Blood Code, so you can customise any class to your personal play style. You do this by changing things called Blood Codes, these are basically classes and each class has unique abilities, to change your Blood Code all you have to do is go into your inventory and select a new Blood code and you'll instantly change class. One unique aspect of Code Vein is that you're able to switch classes on the fly, if you don't like your play style at any point you can switch it up. The partners basically let you indirectly choose Normal Or Hard Mode. The partner system this does make the game way easier but it's entirely optional so you can turn the partners off if you want a real challenge. Throughout the entire game you have the option to choose one of several AI companions to adventure with you, these companions help you out in combat and also bring you back from the dead if you die. You don't have a shield and you'll spent most of your time dodge rolling, you can block with your sword but you'll take chip damage so dodging is your best bet.Ĭode Vein is quite a bit easier than most FromSoft games thanks to the partner system. The basic gameplay is similar to Bloodborne more than Dark Souls, you have a stamina bar, a health bar and enemies hit hard. I'll be honest, I originally went into Code Vein expecting a mediocre Dark Souls clone and i was pleasantly surprised.

This should give you an idea if it's worth picking up the full game. You'll be able to create your custom character (the appearance of which you can transfer to the full game) and play through the first level and some side dungeons. Give that a shot if this looks at all interesting.

There is a free demo available, at least for PC (Steam) and PS4. There was never that reticence about leveling a particular stat, instead knowing that I can try every aspect whenever I desire. As you find abilities in one code that you like, you can typically unlock them to be mastered in other codes (most codes have an ability locked to it, but the majority of abilities can be transferred once mastered.) As someone who typically will go for a quick melee type, it was quite a treat to try out more heavy melee and caster builds. Since your class is determined by your "blood code" and this can be changed at will, there are numerous ways to experiment with different playstyles. You can customize the majority of your traits at any time, mixing/matching many outfits.īest of all to me, though, is the "class" customization. If you've looked at this game at all, you've already heard about the character customization options. I typically don't like snow/ice levels in any game though, so it may just be me in this case. While not nearly as twisty and confusing, I just found it annoying. I personally did not like the "snow" area. It just took some time to examine and learn.
One area is notoriously confusing, but did not bother me that much. The character development as you regain the memories of various NPCs really adds to the backstory, and built it into a very concrete world. Yes it is completely bonkers, but I found it engaging enough to want to see it through to the end. I've seen complaints about the story, but I enjoyed it. I'm glad I did-this is one of my favorite games in the Souls-type genre.
I'm not really an anime fan, but I had heard interesting things about this game so I thought I'd give it a try.
